Richmond Mayor Signs Proclamation for #untoldrva’s GABRIEL WEEK
We celebrate the phenomenal work of Free Egunfemi in her ongoing efforts to unearth the powerful contributions of African Americans to the shaping of Virginia's history. Free is not only a Community Trustbuilding Fellowship Alumni, she also serves as an Architect with Initiatives of Change’s Narrative Change Collaborative, launching in January 2019.
The creator of #untoldrva, Free is an alchemist, blending storytelling, archival practices, installations, performance and audiovisuals into a brew that ignites deep ancestral codes, compels self-reflection and creates space for new conversations to bear fruit.
Over the last several years, #untoldrva has payed tribute to revolutionary leader Gabriel Prosser recognizing his fundamental contributions to freedom-making during the week of his natal day. Between August 27 - Sept 2, 2018, GABRIEL WEEK took place, a unique 7 day cycle of performances, discussions, interventions and film screenings with partners across the city that provided a deeper insight into this legacy and its potential resonance for present and future work in commemorative justice.
To kick off this week, Richmond's Mayor, Levar Stoney, officially recognized the city's support of GABRIEL WEEK with a signed proclamation. On Friday August 31st, IofC partnered with #untoldrva and the #AfricanaIndependentFilmFestival for a film screening of "Tobacco Burn" and a dialogue about Virginia's deep histories of self-determination, intersectionality and resistance at Ross Browne Studio.
